Getting Around

Airport to Train Station

Madrid: Long distance, AVE and suburban train stations operate underground from the Airport. Metro links also underground connecting stations on the Spanish rail network. Barcelona: Renfe trains every 30 mins from the airport to Barcelona Sants rail station. Journey takes 25 minutes. From Terminal 1 there’s a shuttle bus to the train station in the airport. Valencia: Airport train station is on the lower/underground level of terminal. Two Metro lines run into the city

 

Tickets & Discounts

Groups of 10 to 25 people receive a discount on trains – varies depending on train. 30% discount on all travel to Exhibition and Conference.

AVE and Long Distance – discount if the purchase is made seven days prior to day of travel.  Gold Card holders (pensioners, over 60 years and people with a disability can avail of discounts. Web Rates: Book 15 days prior to the date of travel and get a discount on AVE and long distance trains. Discounts for children aged 4-13 years old (age limit may vary). Children under 4 travel for free, except on suburban trains where children under 6 may travel for free.Discounts are available for large families. Youth cards available for those aged 12-25 years old. Monthly pass which offers discounts is available.

Student – monthly pass with discounts of 40%. Youth discount for young people under 26. Senior Discount – Spain’s RENFE rail system offers senior travellers aged 60 and older the Tarieta Dorada (‘Gold Card’), enabling a senior to save 25-40% off train tickets.

The Tareta Dorada cards are sold at the RENFE station for five Euros, with one year’s validation.

Onboard Stuff

Seats and Beds – 3 types of seating classes. Club (business), Preferente (1st class) or Tourist (2nd Class). Overnight sleeper trains called ‘trainhotels’ operated by Elispos offer a range of different sleeping facilitates. e.g. Super reclining seats and berths.

Baggage – 2 bags/suitcases and 1 hand held piece of luggage, not weighing more than 20kg. Small pets are allowed onboard trains. Bikes are only allowed on sleeper trains and must be dismantled in a zip-up bag

Onboard Services – Depending on your class. e.g. Club, Preferente or Tourist (2nd Class)

Station stuff – All major Spanish train stations offer left luggage facilities with lockers ranging in size from small, medium and large.

The Small Print; Majority of trains require seating reservations.. Book well in advance with sleeper trains, as they are highly popular. Automatic check-in machines are now situated at all major stations.
